Chronic Pain
Pain is considered chronic when it has lasted for longer than 6 months. This is quite different to acute injury as the body has now started to become accustomed to the pain and your movement and quality of life has most likely been compromised, whether you realised it or not! In some cases, the cause of injury may not even be relevant but the body has now been caught in the pain cycle and can still cause suffering. When dealing with chronic pain, a thorough history is key to establishing what factors have led to the onset of chronic pain. Things such as muscle weakness or imbalance, poor training technique or even overuse and overload can lead to persistent niggles and pain.
The management of chronic pain can take longer when compared to other injuries, due to the longer history of pain and often the added challenge of identifying and correcting poor habits or technique. A clear and thorough assessment as well as smart goal setting are the way to diagnosing and managing chronic pain.
Patients with chronic pain may be eligible to receive FREE treatment under Medicare's Chronic Management Plan (GPCCMP). All you will need is a chronic management plan referral from your GP to receive up to 5 sessions of bulk-billed physiotherapy. (Eligibility required for a management plan with injuries typically needing to be 6 months or older, or potentially one that can last up to and over 6 months. If you are unsure if you are eligible, please call to find out more information or discuss with your GP at your next visit.)
