Dry needling is similar yet different to traditional Chinese acupuncture. Though they use the same type of acupuncture needles, dry needling can be coined the western medicine version to acupuncture. As acupuncture relies on affecting body systems through meridian points, dry needling is anatomy based and targets soft tissue trigger points for a localised affect for recovery and healing. The insertion of very fine needles directly into sore or spasmed muscles causes the release of chemicals and increases blood flow to allow for tissue healing, muscle and nerve stimulation, almost working like a restart button for improved muscle activation and function. Some trigger points that are released cause a 'twitch' response in the muscle, where the muscle involuntarily contracts before relaxing again into a better state.

Dry needling is a perfectly safe and minimally invasive treatment technique that uses single-use sterile acupuncture needles. Some patients can feel some soreness where the needles were placed, often comparable to normal muscle soreness after exercise. Some bleeding or bruising can also occur especially for those on blood thinners, however is quite rare.
