Vestibular Rehab

The vestibular system in your inner ear is responsible for maintaining your balance and spatial awareness. When this system is disrupted, it often results in vertigo. One common cause is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which happens when tiny crystals shift out of place and drift into the inner ear canals. These canals contain sensitive hair-like receptors that detect movement. When those crystals move, they trigger false signals to your brain, making it feel as though you are spinning or moving even when you are perfectly still. This conflict between your senses and your physical state causes the brain to become disoriented, leading to the intense sensation of dizziness.

BPPV often results in the feeling that the room is spinning, compared to just the general sense of light-headedness or dizziness. Diagnosis includes ruling out any other cause of vertigo or dizziness and then treatment through specialised manoeuvres to relocate the crystals back into place and normalizing the messages to the brain about the bodies spatial awareness.
